President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) is set to be formally nominated as the ruling party’s candidate for the 2026 presidential elections on Tuesday, 23 September 2025. The announcement sparked excitement across the country, with supporters making plans to converge on Kampala in large numbers for what promises to be a grand display of political support.
NRM and PLU Join Forces
In a joint press conference today, leaders from the NRM and the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) emphasized that they are part of the “NRM family” and must work together to consolidate support for President Museveni. The two organisations have struck a new understanding to coordinate grassroots mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2026 elections.
Hon. David Kabanda, PLU Secretary General, declared:
“PLU has officially joined hands to rally massive support for President Museveni ahead of the 2026 elections. Our mission is clear: an 80% victory on 12th January 2026! I call on all PLU supporters to gather tomorrow at our head offices in Naguru as we prepare to walk together to Kololo in full force.”
Kabanda also conveyed greetings from Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chairman of PLU, to all PLU supporters and the wider NRM family, urging unity and collective action.
From the NRM side, Hon. Tadwong Richard, Secretary General, said:
“Together with PLU, under the #PAMOJA banner, we will traverse the country and rally support for Mzee. This partnership is about strengthening grassroots mobilisation and ensuring that every supporter is reached.”

Other PLU and NRM leaders, including Hon. Michael Mawanda and members of the PLU Central Committee, reiterated the importance of solidarity and coordinated efforts to guarantee a successful nomination and campaign.
Across social media and grassroots networks, excitement is building. Many Ugandans have expressed that they cannot wait to attend the nomination rally, viewing it as an opportunity to show their support for the President and witness a major political event first-hand.
Background
President Museveni has held power since 1986. With the 2026 election approaching, he is seeking another term as both President and Chairman of the NRM. Internal challengers to his authority within the party have surfaced in recent years, but the strong alignment between NRM and PLU has consolidated support and mobilised key grassroots structures in his favour.
The Patriotic League of Uganda, originally formed as the MK Movement and later rebranded, has increasingly engaged in NRM politics while maintaining its status as a civic organisation. Its collaboration with NRM underlines a strategic effort to strengthen mobilisation at the grassroots and present a united front ahead of the elections.
The 23 September nomination is more than a procedural requirement. For Museveni, NRM, and PLU, it is a high-stakes opportunity to showcase political strength, unity, and momentum ahead of the 2026 elections. Supporters across the country are eager to witness history in the making.
